Daisy Bell in “2001: A Space Odyssey” 🎶

, , …,

Daisy Bell is a waltz. Famously used in the movie 〈2001: A Space Odyssey〉, sung by the artificial intelligence computer HAL 9000 in his demise.

In 1961, the IBM 7094 became the first computer to sing, singing the song Daisy Bell. Vocals were programmed by John Kelly and Carol Lockbaum and the accompaniment was programmed by Max Mathews.

Daisy Bell — Music and lyrics by Harry Dacre, 1892.

There is a flower
Within my heart,
Daisy, Daisy!
Planted one day
By a glancing dart,
Planted by Daisy Bell!
Whether she loves me
Or loves me not,
Sometimes it's hard to tell;
Yet I am longing to share the lot -
Of beautiful Daisy Bell!

Daisy, Daisy,
Give me your answer do!
I'm half crazy,
All for the love of you!
It won't be a stylish marriage,
I can't afford a carriage
But you'll look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle built for two.

We will go “tandem”
As man and wife,
Daisy, Daisy!
“Peddling” away
Down the road of life,
I and my Daisy Bell!
When the road's dark
We can both despise
P'licemen and “lamps” as well;
There are “bright lights”
In the dazzling eyes
Of beautiful Daisy Bell!

Daisy, Daisy,
Give me your answer do!
I'm half crazy,
All for the love of you!
It won't be a stylish marriage,
I can't afford a carriage
But you'll look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle built for two.

I will stand by you
In weal or woe,
Daisy, Daisy!
You'll be the bell(e)
Which I'll ring you know!
Sweet little Daisy Bell!
You'll take the “lead”
In each “trip” we take,
Then if I don't do well,
I will permit you to
Use the brake,
My beautiful Daisy Bell!

This is a fantastic love song. The memorability of this song lies in the fact that it is used in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. The significance of this song lies in the fact that it is one of the first song to be programed and sung by a computer using speech synthesis. (which inspired the 2001 scene.) For more info about this song, see Daisy Bell.

In the movie “2001”, Daisy Bell is sung by the fictional machine HAL 9000, of the refrain:

It won't be a stylish marriage,

I was so enchanted by the song and the associated prospect of the fact that this is such a love song yet it sings the demise of a being, of which i'm a nerd of. (i.e. artificial intelligence)

Here's a Perl program that uses Mac's speech synth to sing the song. Daisy_Bell_MacPerl.pl. If you have other programs that sing the song, please let me know.

Here are two midi files of the instrumental: daisy_bell.mid (circus-like), daisy_bell2.mid (with cowbells).
